WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.-- Northwood University Athletic Director Rick Smoliak has announced the resignation of John Thurston, the first coach in Northwood women’s basketball history.

"We are saddened to see John go," said Smoliak. "He has done an excellent job and we appreciate all that he has done for Northwood University and our women’s basketball program."

After spending 2005 getting ready for the first season of competition, Thurston compiled a 41-21 record in two seasons as head coach of the Lady Seahawks. He led Northwood to two Florida Sun Conference titles, and their first appearance at the NAIA National Tournament in 2008. He was named FSC Coach of the Year in 2008, and under his guidance, Katie Vican (2007) and Kara Otterbine (2008) were named FSC Player of the Year.

Thurston leaves Northwood to take an assistant women’s coaching position at Fordham University in New York City. The Rams, led by head coach Cathy Andruzzi, are members of NCAA Division I and the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Northwood is accepting applications for its vacant position. Please submit a letter of application, resume, and reference list to:
