The Sun Conference Announces 2009 Women's Soccer Honor Roll
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Sun Conference has announced the 2009 women’s soccer All-Conference teams as voted on by the league coaches. 23 student-athletes from six institutions were honored. League co-champions Northwood and Embry-Riddle placed seven and six on the All-Conference roster respectively.
The Eagles captured all three of the individual awards, which included Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Champion of Character. In addition, ERAU coach Samantha Baggett Bohon was named Co-Coach of the Year along with Northwood’s Ty Brewer after leading their teams to 8-1 conference records.
Three-time Sun Conference Offensive Player of the Week Elina Johansson was named the Player of the Year. Johansson, who was selected as the National Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 27, has tallied 20 goals and 18 assists on the season for 58 points en route to breaking numerous game, season and career records at Embry-Riddle. The Strangnas, Sweden native leads the NAIA in total assists (18) and assists per game (1.060).
Embry-Riddle’s Krizzy Menez garnered the league’s Newcomer of the Year honors. The Key West, Fla. native scored three goals and tallied seven assists to help the Eagles to a 12-5 overall record.
ERAU senior Mandy Drummond was selected as the Champion of Character Award winner for the second year in a row. Drummond, a defensive stalwart for the Eagles, scored two goals for the Blue and Gold while playing 1,325 minutes without receiving a card. She has a 3.6 grade point average and has volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club of Daytona Beach, helping put on free soccer clinics for local youth.
Northwood, Embry-Riddle, Webber International and SCAD will all be in action this coming weekend in the semifinals of The Sun Conference tournament. Fourth-seeded SCAD will take on No. 1 Northwood on Saturday (Nov. 7) in West Palm Beach, Fla. at 3 p.m. No. 2 Embry-Riddle will host No. 3 Webber International at 6 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 6) in Daytona Beach, Fla.
