KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Five of the Embry-Riddle Eagles baseball players were garnered with post-season awards, with pitcher Justin Zinkovich being honored as an NAIA First-Team All-American and four others being named NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athletes.
Zinkovich led the Eagles with a perfect 11-0 regular season record and picked up two wins in the post-season before suffering his first loss in the World Series, ending the year with a 13-1 overall record. He started 17 games for the Blue and Gold, pitching 116.1 innings with a 2.32 ERA and struck out 95 batters.
The Cocoa, Fla. native, ranked first in the NAIA in wins, eighth in innings pitched per game (6.843), and 14th in ERA.
Seniors Matt Steele and Joel Blomberg were honored as 2009 NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athletes for the second consecutive year and were joined on the list by juniors Travis Bearden and Austin Quinn.
Steele and Blomberg both graduated this May with degrees in Meteorology Research and Aviation Management, respectively. Bearden is studying engineering and Quinn is majoring in Communications.
The recipients are required to be a junior or above in academic
standing; in attendance at the nominating institution a minimum of one
full year of attendance; has a minimum grade point average of 3.50 (on a
4.0 scale) at the time of nomination at the nominating institution; has
been certified as eligible on the varsity roster; form completed with
required signatures.
