SCAD’s Hreinsson, STU’s Jones Top Men’s Soccer Honor Roll
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- SCAD Savannah’s Ellert Hreinsson and St. Thomas’ Aaron Jones headlined the 2010 Sun Conference Men’s Soccer All-Conference team, which was announced by the league office on Friday. Hreinsson was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year, while Jones garnered Defensive Player of the Year honors.
A senior forward from Kopavgur, Iceland, Hreinsson was also tabbed as the overall Player of the Year after leading the Bees to a share of the regular season conference crown. He finished the regular season tied for the lead in goals scored with 18 and added six assists for a total of 42 points on the year. Hreinsson, who was named the National Player of the Week on Sept. 7, leads the NAIA in game-winning goals with eight and will close out his career as the Bees’ all-time leading scorer.
Jones (London, England) captained his Bobcat squad to a share of the regular season title as St. Thomas finished tied with SCAD at 8-1 in the league. The Bobcats’ primary goalkeeper, Jones heads into postseason play with four shutouts and a .77 goals against average in 11 matches.
Warner senior Thanas Bitro (Pogradec, Albania) was the recipient of the 2010 Sun Conference Champion of Character Award. In addition to representing Warner on the soccer field, Bitro manages to hold down two jobs while pursuing a degree in Business Management/Finance.
Coach of the Year honors went to St. Thomas’ Felix Mats. The Bobcats are currently 10-5-1 overall and after capturing a share of first place in the conference regular season race, Mats’ team will begin postseason play as the top seed in the six-team conference tournament which gets underway on Saturday, Nov. 6.
