SILVIS, Ill. – The Savannah College of Art and Design jumped up five spots to 10th place after the third round of the NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship Thursday (May 20).
The Bees, who are ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, shot 309 (+25) on the par-71, 6,983-yard layout on the TPC at Deere Run, which annually hosts the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic, to stand at 916 (+64) through 54 holes. The round was the sixth lowest out of the 29 teams in the tournament as most teams struggled with the wet conditions as it rained most of the day.
No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University and No. 3 Malone University are tied for the third-round lead at 896 (+44) after shooting identical rounds of 304 (+20). Defending champion and No. 2-ranked Oklahoma Christian University and second-round leader and No. 10 University of South Carolina Beaufort are two strokes back at 898 (+46). Oklahoma Christian shot 306 (+22) while USCB carded a round of 312 (+28). Grand View College shot the low round of the day 291 (+7) and is in fifth place at 901 (+49).
Malone’s Justin Lower continues to how the individual lead in the 156-player field at 209 (-4) after putting together an even-par round of 71. Lower holds a six-stroke advantage over Madonna University’s Brett Quitiquit.
#Scott Melton# and #Greg Richards# are the top golfers for SCAD as they are each tied for 41st place at 229 (+16). Melton had the low round of the day for the Bees with a 76 (+5) while Richards had a 78 (+7). #Loren Bunting# and #Tom Hayes# are each tied for 62nd at 232 (+19). Bunting recorded a 77 (+6) while Hayes fired his second consecutive round of 78 (+7). #Mika Becktor# shot an 86 (+15) and is tied for 81st place at 235 (+22).
The 72-hole tournament was cut to the top 17 teams and 40 individuals, including ties, after the completion of the third round. The 2010 event is being hosted by Saint Ambrose University and the Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau.
