Trio of Eagles Earn National Honors
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Three Embry-Riddle baseball players have earned national recognition, both on the field and in the classroom. Saul Meza, Phillip Reamy and Austin Quinn were recognized by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics on Wednesday.
Meza, a senior from Chicago, Ill., was named a 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Baseball Scholar Athlete. Nominated by each institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, have achieved junior academic status to qualify. Meza is a graduate student in ERAU's Master of Business Administration program. A two-year member of the Eagles' baseball squad, he has been used primarily in courtesy/pinch running situations. Meza provided the 2010 Avista-NAIA World Series with one of its' most thrilling plays when he stole home in Embry-Riddle's game against Belhaven (Miss.) on Monday.
Reamy was named to the 2010 NAIA Baseball All-America second team for his performance during his junior season. The junior from Centreville, Va. has put together one of the best seasons in the NAIA for relief pitchers. He has a microscopic 0.26 ERA, allowing just one run in 34.0 innings pitched and has a perfect 5-0 record in addition to 10 saves. Opponents are hitting just .189 against the right-hander in his 24 appearances. The Air Traffic Management graduate pitched 6.2 innings of relief in the Eagles' 10-7 victory over No. 1 Lewis-Clark State on Tuesday, giving up just six hits and his first run of the year while getting the win. Reamy was a first-team All-Conference selection and was the only reliever on the second-team All-America squad.
Quinn earned both Scholar Athlete and All-America honors in his senior season. This was Quinn's second Scholar Athlete honor, as he was also named to the team in his junior season. Quinn is a Communications major at Embry-Riddle and boasts a 3.61 cumulative GPA. Quinn is also the 10th first team All-American in ERAU baseball history. The righty was one of four starting pitchers to be named to the All-American first team after his very impressive 2010 season. He has posted a 11-2 overall record in 20 appearances this season with 18 starts. His 1.80 ERA ranks fourth overall in the NAIA and his 129.0 innings pitched ranks second in the country. The native of Titusville, Fla. has three shutouts and six complete games with 84 strikeouts. Quinn, who owns several season and career records at Embry-Riddle, was The Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year and the league's Champion of Character award winner.
