SCAD upsets No. 14 Sea Lions in five sets

SAN DIEGO – The SCAD Savannah volleyball team rallied for a five-set victory – 18-25, 25-19, 31-29 and 15-9 – to upset No. 14-ranked Point Loma Nazarene University Saturday (Aug. 28) evening at the Seaside Invitational being played at PLNU’s Golden Gymnasium.

The Bees improved to 2-2 while the Sea Lions slipped to 2-3. SCAD will open up play in The Sun Conference Friday (Sept. 3) at 7 p.m. when they travel to Miami to face St. Thomas (Fla.) University as the Bees open a two-match swing through south Florida.

The Bees rallied to tie the match at 2 games as SCAD bolted out to a 16-7 lead in the fourth set after Alex Shipley recorded three straight service aces. Point Loma Nazarene fought back and took a 27-26 lead. The Sea Lions had a chance to close out the match, but Olympia Haney registered a kill to knot the game at 28. SCAD would go on to close out the pivotal fourth set at 31-29 as Shipley recorded another service ace.

Haney led the offensive attack for the Bees with 22 kills out of 43 swings, good for a .419 hitting percentage. She also tallied 12 digs and three total blocks. Jen Drouin also paced SCAD’s attack with 18 kills, 13 digs and four total blocks. Zita Friedenfelde led the defense with 16 digs while Shipley had six total blocks and five service aces. Brynna Robinson had 27 assists for the Bees while Kylee Greenwood had 23 assists and three service aces.
