Bees sweep titles at Gamecock Invitational

FORT JACKSON, S.C. –
For the second consecutive year, the SCAD Savannah men's cross country team swept individual and team Division II titles at the Gamecock Invitational Friday (Sept. 3) evening.

It was the fourth time in the past two seasons that the Bees turned the feat.

SCAD bested three other teams to win with 25 points, 10 points ahead of rival University of South Carolina Beaufort and 53 better than Voorhees College. For the Bees, it was the program’s fifth-ever team title.

Leading the way for the Bees in the 5K race was Cesar Fernandez Lazaro, who won the Division II event for the second consecutive year and was the third fastest overall out of the 44 runners that competed with time of 15:32.80. It was Fernandez Lazaro’s third individual title in his career and the program’s sixth overall.

SCAD had six other runners finish in the top 10 in Division II. John Sutherland was fourth with a time of 16:35.23 followed by Ben Harrison in fifth (16:43.78), Joe Housel in seventh (17:29.30), John Golden in eighth (17:37.24), Moises Silva in ninth (personal best 17:40.86) and Nick Curtis in 10th (17:44.59). Andrew Herzog also finished 12th for the Bees with a time of 19:06.57.

SCAD returns to action next Friday (Sept. 10) at 5 p.m. when they compete at the Bobcat Invitational in Milledgeville, Ga.
