Florida Memorial men’s soccer team

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Florida Memorial University’s men’s soccer team upset fifth-ranked NCAA Division 2 Lynn University on its home Field with a score of 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon.  Lucas Roque and Igor Carvalho provide the spark for the Lions, who improve to 3-1 overall.

The game started out with a bang as each team scored within the first seven minutes of play.  Florida Memorial (3-1-0) caught Lynn's  defense napping off a free kick when Igor Carvalho found Lucas Roque streaking down the center of the field for an easy one-on-one breakaway to make it 1-0.

With Florida Memorial playing its defensive unit very close to midfield it  allowed Lynn University to even things up to one all (1-1) when Stefan Wolf slipped a ball over the Florida Memorial defense.  Gordon used his height to get the first ball past Kevin Raymond and then used his head to sneak around keeper Daniel DeSouza for an open-net goal.

It appeared overtime was imminent as the two teams were locked in a stalemate until Carvalho broke free in the midfield, combined with Roque on a give-and-go near the top of the box, he had an easy look for a shot to the left post, making it 2-1.

One minute and 15 seconds later Roque would strike again for the game-winner.  Pedro Luiz Lima slipped a pass through the Lynn University defense to Lucas Roque, who evaded Alessandro Salvatore for his second goal of the match.

Lynn University made a rally late in the contest when Harald Gracholski spun around two Florida Memorial defenders on the back line and sent a cross through the six-yard box.  DeSouza mistakenly let the ball go by and Conrad was there to tap in the easy goal.  Florida Memorial held possession and defended a corner kick with two minutes on the game clock to hold on for the win.

Florida Memorial returns to action on Friday, September 10 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Davie, FL to battle Nova Southeastern University.
