The Sun Conference Announces Men’s Tennis Honor Roll

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 2011 Sun Conference men’s tennis All-Conference team was announced at the conference tournament banquet hosted by Embry-Riddle at the Sunset Harbor Yacht Club on Thursday evening. Five schools were represented on the All-Conference roster that consisted of a first and second team and was chosen by the league coaches.

Embry-Riddle head coach Dave Paschal was tabbed as the league’s Coach of the Year for the seventh straight season. Paschal led the Eagles, who finished at 6-0 in the conference standings, to their seventh consecutive regular season title and the No. 2 spot in the NAIA national poll.

Player of the Year honors went to Embry-Riddle newcomer Chris Freeman. A sophomore from Costa Mesa, Calif., Freeman played at the top singles and doubles positions for the Eagles in 2011. Ranked first in the South Region and fifth nationally in singles, he turned in a 13-4 singles record, including a perfect 5-0 mark in league play.

The Champions of Character Award was presented to another Embry-Riddle sophomore, David Spennare. A player that Paschal says “truly embraces the Champions of Character initiative and respects all his opponents,” Spennare contributed over 20 hours of community service this year, while maintaining a 3.86 grade point average in Business Administration, including a perfect 4.0 GPA in each of his last two semesters.

The 2011 Sun Conference tournament features four teams ranked in the Top 25 in the NAIA national poll, including second-ranked Embry-Riddle, 12th-ranked St. Thomas, 16th-ranked SCAD Savannah and 21st-ranked Webber International. The tournament, being played at Embry-Riddle’s Crotty Tennis Complex, gets underway at 9 a.m. on Friday when No. 2 seed St. Thomas takes on No. 3 SCAD Savannah, followed by top seed Embry-Riddle against No. 4 Webber International at 2 p.m. The championship match takes place at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the tournament champion receiving an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship in Mobile, Ala., May 17-21.
