Lady Lions Stun # 13 ranked St. Thomas University
The Florida Memorial women’s basketball team pulled off a stunning upset over St. Thomas, The 13th ranked team in the nation. With the win, Florida Memorial ended a two-game regular season losing streak to St. Thomas. The Lady Lions are now 1-6 in conference play and 5-13 overall. A balanced offensive game from the Lady Lions led to a key conference win at The A. Chester Robinson Athletic Center in front of a packed crowd.
The first half of the game saw neither team make any kind of considerable run, but as the game grew close through the first half St. Thomas would hold a seven point lead. But Florida Memorial would not back down and would respond each time. Florida Memorial shot 37.9 percent from the field in the first half while St. Thomas shot 26.9 percent but this proved to be no indication of how the second half would unfold.
The teams went into the locker room with St. Thomas up by six, 25-19, and in the second half St. Thomas mounted their largest lead 33-19 with 16:44 to play, but the Lady Lions roared their way back from the 14-point deficit behind big shots by Kalica Battle and Dominique Butler came through at the charity stripe when it was needed most to seal the victory. Butler knocked down one of two foul shots to give the Lions a 49-45 lead and iced the game with 12.5 seconds remaining.
Dominique Butler led the Lions with 17 points, 16 rebounds and 8 blocks. Kalica Battle had 16 points, 9 rebounds and 2 steals, Yushanda Bowe chipped in 9 points, while Dominique Jackson added 5 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Lions return to action on Friday, February 3, 2012, when they host Johnson and Wales University at 7 p.m. in the A. Chester Robinson Athletic Center.
