Sun Conference Baseball Gold Glove Team Announced
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Sun Conference office has released the 2012 Gold Glove team for the sport of baseball. The nine members of the squad were selected by the coaches of The Sun Conference.
1B - Matt Zajac, SCAD Savannah
The Bees' first baseman, Zajac led the team with 471 putouts on the year. The Pine Brook, N.J. native assited in 29 putouts and helped turn 49 double plays while recording a .986 fielding percentage.
2B - Gabe Loweree, Ave Maria
Loweree, a junior Gyrene from El Paso, Texas, had 257 chances for Ave Maria this season, recording 163 putouts, 89 assists and just five errors for a .981 fielding percentage. Loweree also turned 21 double plays and picked off seven runners.
3B - Nick Pascente, Webber International
Playing the hot corner, the Johnsburg, Ill. native committed only five errors on the year in 141 chances. Pascente helped turn nine double plays and posted a fielding percentage of .965.
SS - Alex Sanchez, Ave Maria
At the busiest position on the diamond, Sanchez was impressive, recording 89 putouts, 164 assists and just 17 errors for the Gyrenes. A junior from Hialeah, Fla., Sanchez turned 29 double plays for AMU.
LF - Shane Casey, Southeastern
Casey helped the Fire with 95 putouts and 12 assists on the year for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. The senior from Clearwater, Fla. was a part of two double plays for SEU.
CF - Ethan Lovell, Warner
A senior from Lithia, Fla., Lovell was perfect in the field for the Royals in 2012. Lovell putout 197 opposing players, assisting on 21 other putouts from the oufield. He also helped turn three double playes without committing an error all year long for a 1.000 fielding percentage.
RF - Brandon Kirby, Warner
Kirby became the second Royal outfielder to earn a Gold Glove in 2012, recording 72 putouts and six assists while committing only two errors for a .975 fielding percentage. Kirby is a junior from Lake Wales, Fla.
C - Adam Cellini, Embry-Riddle
Cellini, a junior from Orlando, Fla., started in 48 games for the eighth-ranked Eagles, all behind the dish. Cellini recorded 291 putouts and 38 assists against just three errors for a .991 fielding percentage. Cellini gunned down 17 baserunners and did not record a passed ball in 2012.
P - Chad Modomo, Embry-Riddle
A junior from Winter Park, Fla., Modomo became the second straight Eagle win a conference Gold Glove at the pitcher position (Kevin Maloney, 2011). Modomo made seven putouts and assisted in 13 other putouts, while committing just one error on the year.
