MIRAMAR, Fla. — Warner University pulled away from rival Webber International to win the men’s team title Sunday at the Sun Conference Track & Field Championships at Ansin Sports Complex.
The Royals compiled 200 points to defeat secodn-place Webber (159) and third-place USC Beaufort (143). Warner coach Emperatriz Gonzalez-Henao was named Coach of the Year following the Royals’ triumph, which was highlighted by a meet record of 41.20 seconds by Warner’s winning team in the 4x100 relay.
One member of that team, Tobias Durham, was among the highest scorers in the meet, also winning the 100 meters and triple jump, finishing second in the 200 and long jump, and placing fifth in the 110-meter hurdles.
Michael Cassidy also was a standout for the Royals, winning the hammer, and shot put, placing second in the javelin and finishing third in the discus.
Keiser’s Devin Williams was named Field Athlete of the Year following an impressive and versatile performance in which he won the javelin, was second in the discus and pole vault, third in the 110-meter hurdles and triple jump, fourth in the long jump, fifth in the high jump, and 10th in the shot put.
USCB’s Anthony Vecchio earned Track Athlete of the Year honors, winning the 1,500 meters, placing second in the 5,000 and 10,000, and helping the Sand Sharks place fourth in the 4x400 relay and fifth in the 4x800.
Keiser’s Kyle Pleban took down a meet record in the 200-meter final with a time of 21.23, besting the previous mark of 21.34 by Florida Memorial Raymond Holmes in 2006
Webber’s Dequan Harvin set a meet record in the discus with a mark of 47.65m, topping the mark of 47.21 set at last year’s meet by Gerrard Burrows of Florida Memorial.
