2019 Sun Conference Women’s Basketball Championship Begin Tuesday

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Feb. 18, 2019) – And then there were six…That’s how many teams remain in the hunt for the 2019 Sun Conference Tournament crown which tips off on Tuesday, February 19.
This year’s TSC Women’s Basketball Championship presented by Shula's Hotel and Golf Club will begin with a pair of quarterfinal contests featuring Florida Memorial (No. 5) at Ave Maria (No. 4) and Keiser (No. 6) at Coastal Georgia (No. 3).
The top two seeds, Southeastern (No. 1) and St. Thomas (No. 2), await the winners of both quarterfinal matchups with the semifinals (hosted by the Fire) set for Friday, February 22.
The
Gyrenes (21-8, 11-7 TSC) will host the
Lions (17-12, 10-8 TSC) at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams split the season series as FMU defeated AMU, 75-71, on Saturday to close out the regular season. AMU has not lost back-to-back games all season and owns a 12-3 record at the Tom Golisano Field House. FMU brings a 5-10 road record into this week’s game.
AMU enters Tuesday, averaging 71.6 points-per-game (No. 4 in the conference and No. 37 in the nation) on 42.6 percent shooting from the floor (No. 2 in the conference and No. 24 in the nation). Defensively, the Gyrenes are allowing 59.3 points-per-game (No. 2 in the conference and No. 16 in the nation). Florida Memorial has been one of the top scoring teams in the conference for much of the season, averaging 81.5 points-per-game (No. 2 in the conference and No. 8 in the nation) while shooting 37.5 percent from the floor.
The Gyrenes have one of the conference top players in
Sarah Miller, who comes into this week’s action averaging 17.1 points-per-game (No. 7 in the conference and No. 30 in the nation) and 13.4 rebounds-per-contest (No. 1 in the conference and No. 2 in the nation). The Lions feature
Kanesha Battle, who leads the team, averaging 20.6 points-per-game (No. 1 in the conference and No. 5 in the nation).
The winner of this contest will face the top-seeded
Fire (25-2, 18-0 TSC) on Friday (5:00 p.m.), which claimed its fourth-straight regular season title. SEU has won 60-consecutive games versus TSC opponents, dating back to February of 2016.
SEU is led by
Elsa Paulsson-Glantz, who is averaging 17.3 points-per-game (No. 6 in the conference and No. 26 in the nation) on 51.3 percent shooting from the floor (No. 4 in the conference and No. 20 in the nation).
Halee Printz is the nation’s leader in assists, averaging 6.7 per game while
Marlena Schmidt ranks No. 3 in the nation in blocks-per-game (3.0).
Tuesday will also feature the
Mariners (19-10, 12-6 TSC) hosting the
Seahawks (14-15, 8-10 TSC) at Coffin Gym at 6:00 p.m. The two teams split the season series with each claiming victories on their home courts. CCG brings a 12-3 home record into Tuesday’s game while KU looks to improve on a 6-7 road record during the 2018-19 campaign.
Coastal Georgia is averaging 73.9 points-per-game (No. 3 in the conference and No. 30 in the nation) on 41.8 percent shooting from the floor (No. 3 in the conference and No. 40 in the nation). The Mariners are holding the opposition to 68.0 points-per-contest (No. 3 in the conference). The Seahawks, which won two-straight to earn the final spot in the playoffs, come into this week, averaging 67.4 points-per-game (No. 8 in the conference) on 39.8 percent shooting from the floor (No. 6 in the conference).
CCG is led by
Brianna Gipson, who enters the KU game averaging 17.7 points-per-game (No. 5 in the conference and No. 21 in the nation). Gipson also leads the Mariners in rebounding, averaging 8.8 boards-per-contest (No. 4 in the conference and No. 29 in the nation). KU’s top scorer is
Donivan Dyson, who is averaging 15.7 points-per-game (No. 9 in the conference and No. 49 in the nation).
Midori Long is the Seahawks leader in rebounding, averaging 10.2 boards-per-contest (No. 2 in the conference and No. 13 in the nation).
The
Bobcats (21-8, 13-5 TSC) await the winner of CCG and KU. The second semifinal, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday will take place at the Furnace in Lakeland, Florida. STU had its first-round bye secured prior to the final week of the regular season. The Bobcats swept the season series with both Coastal Georgia and Keiser.
STU is averaging 69.1 points-per-game (No. 6 in the conference) while shooting 39.4 percent from the floor (No. 7 in the conference). The Bobcats are holding their opponents to 63.7 points-per-game (No. 3 in the conference).
St. Thomas is led by
Samara Auguste, who comes into the week averaging 18.7 points-per-game (No. 3 in the conference and No. 13 in the nation). Auguste also leads the team in steals, averaging 2.6 per game (No. 4 in the conference and No. 14 in the nation). The Bobcat’s leader on the boards
is Ebony Griffin, who is averaging 10.2 rebounds-per-contest (No. 3 in the conference and No. 14 in the nation).
The Sun Conference Championships Game is scheduled for Saturday, February 23. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
